Should WALL-E Be Nominated For Best Picture?

Everyone knows that Disney/Pixar is contemplating pushing WALL-E for a Best Picture nomination.  After the overwhelming critical success of Ratatouille most people expected to see it in the Best Picture category. However, fear of losing steam in the Best Animation category resulted in disappointment for many fans.

The last time an animated film was nominated for the big award was in 1992.  Beauty and the Beast lost the battle against Silence of the Lambs which resulted in a campaign to create the Best Animation category.  Animated films had been losing out on their much deserved recognition far too long.

With overwhelmingly positive reviews, WALL-E is poised to succeed Ratatouille as arguably the best film of the year.  With a 97% rating on RottenTomatoes.com, WALL-E is the highest rated film of the year, and will likley remain in that position.  It already has the Best Animation category in the bag, so why not make a push for the big prize?

According to Academy rules, films nominated in the Best Animation category are also eligible to be considered in the Best Picture category.  Similarly the Director, Writer, and Actors are also eligible to be nominated in their respective Best categories.  I would be disappointed to see Andrew Stanton not nominated for both Writer and Director.  I don’t think I have to worry about the category of Sound Design, Ben Burtt can set the trophy next to the two he already has.  The rest of the categories… who knows… but I’m sure there will be a few more nods to WALL-E in there somewhere.

I think the only thing stopping a nomination is Disney/Pixar themselves.  Everyone wants to see it happen, but as I stated above, they are fearful that a Best Picture campaign could hurt their Best Animation campaign.  Many people believe that a vote in the Best Picture category might not result in a similar vote in the Best Animation category. And what would it mean if WALL-E won Best Picture, but not Best Animated Picture?

What do you all think?  Should Disney/Pixar take the chance?

I say go for it.

I have seen the film. It is one of the most amazing works of art created in the past 100 years.

I was thinking about this earlier today, Clayton. I was thinking how great it would be if this movie landed the Best Picture. In my opinion, it’s the best animation of all time hands down. Saw it this weekend and was blown away. I’m already planning to see it again. What are the chances that Pixar would push the movie to Best Picture?

Also, what are your thoughts on Pixar’s last two releases? It seems as if they’re getting away from children and moving toward adults.

I love to see WALL-E get nominated for Best Picture. Actually I think it deserves a win.

Also, there was wonderful sound editing and mixing by Ben Burtt, he might even deserve a Special Achievement.

And there was a beautful score by Newman. Derserves nomintaion.

Most importantly, Stanton derserves a win for Best Original Screenplay. Beautiful storytelling, beautiful originality.

But what makes those voters discriminate animated movie?

    WALL-E FOR BEST PICTURE.
